The tiff premier of Jemima Khan’s recent film “What’s Love Got to do with it?” features a second generation British Pakistani family

What’s Love Got to do with it?

Toronto international film festival or for a short tiff aired some of the best films from around the world, one of the most underrated titles that flew under the radar was Shekhar Kapur’s What’s Love Got to do with it?” The film was written by Imran Khan’s wife Jemima Khan and starred the talented Lilly James, Sajal Aly, Shahzad Latif, Emma Thompson, Asim Chaudry, and Javed Mirza.

The film is about a cross-cultural rom-com that deals with the second generation British Pakistani family as one of the characters is getting married via arranging. Though the film trailers promised us the comedy on a cliche level, but it does offer the performance from a talented cast of the best UK cinema has to offer.

The film was released on 8 September 2022 at the proverbial festival and was met with critical acclaim with 2 standing ovations, which is the highest honor the film has ever received and UK films are getting better with the romance genre.

This was Sajal Aly’s debut on the international scale, even though the film has yet to release worldwide the critics praised the performance of the cast and the filmmaker’s direction.

Jemima Khan’s screenplay was picked up by the studio of the film and later the distributors of the film. Jemima Khan’s screenplay was inspired by the real people she met and reached out to the Pak community living in the British for generations. The name value of the screenplay is more than the cast of the film, because of Jemima Khan’s marriage to the PTI leader.

The cast was present on the red carpet with Sajal Aly again making the headlines of the stunning dress she wore and the Khan’s son was also present with the cast. The film competed with the best of the best including The Whale (the most anticipated film of 2022 because of Brendan Fraser) and Joyland.

Was the film groundbreaking, no it has not been released yet, but the film has that crazy rich Asian vibes to it which the cliche made too obvious? Like I said the screenplay led by Jemima Khan is the talk of the town in the film world the name value alone can make the film a box office success.

Conclusion:

Jemima Khan Goldsmith really made the name of herself by writing the screenplay, I hope we get to see her more in the upcoming projects. Lily James was the mainstay of British Cinema as she has become more reliable.

The surprise of them all was the return of Shehkur Kapur who also directed iconic films from India like that Bandit Queen, and Mr. India, and also directed English films like Elizabeth and its sequel. The filmmaker was tragic if you say, many of his film projects were shelved including the time machine, Paani, and the trilogy of the Elizabeth film among many more, he could have been Steven Spielberg of Bollywood but such is life. I hope we can see more of him and get to direct his shelved and canceled projects as the paradigm is shifting heavily the people are now ready.
